Nissan India, the Indian arm of the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan has announced the global re-launch of the Datsun brand. The carmaker has unveiled the Datsun Go hatchback in India priced under Rs 4,00,000.

The company has revived the Datsun brand after almost three decades which will hit the Indian car market early in the year 2014. The brand will also be introduced in the global markets such as Indonesia, South Africa and Russia, according to Mr. Carlos Ghosn President and CEO Nissan Motor.

Mr. Ghosn stated that launching the Datsun brand in India is in line with the company’s strategy to tap the emerging markets and boost sales and brand presence in the region. The carmaker expects to increase its market share from the current 1.2 percent in the Indian car industry to 10 percent by mid 2016 on the back of the Datsun brand.

The new hatchback car model will be powered by a 1.2 liter petrol engine and will be engineered and manufactured in India at the Renault-Nissan production facility in Chennai.

The Datsun brand had been phased out by the company in the year 1986 when it was being sold in 190 countries.
