Luxury cars will now be much more convenient to import, thanks to the Indian government’s move to do away with safety and emission certificates from the ‘country of origin’. However, the cars must still comply with European Union standards. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification that a new imported vehicle with a Freight-On-Board (F.O.B.) value of 40,000 dollars or more, and a 3,000cc (or more) petrol-run engine or a 2,500cc diesel engine would be eligible for the easier norms. The move will help companies like Toyota and Mercedes-Benz to import their luxury sedans directly from the US.
