Information Technology (IT) company Wipro is planning to enter the in-car infotainment sector in India, which is presently limited to the use of external devices like cell phones, music systems and navigation devices. Wipro’s infotainment project, being handled by its specially formulated Infotainment and Telematics Practise Team, is now in its second phase. Speaking at the Electronica India 2009 conference held in Bangalore, Mr. Vijayendra Mohan Agrawal, head of Wipro’s infotainment team, said that the project would be completed by March 2010.
The gadgets being designed will be suitable for both premium and small cars and will enable passengers to browse the net, watch internet television, operate Bluetooth-enabled phones through voice commands and use camera displays for navigation purposes. The project will also involve the fitting of the infotainment equipment in the car’s dashboard by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). A Frost and Sullivan study says that the in-dash infotainment industry in India will touch Rs 3,600 crore by 2012.
