Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India is considering creating a series of diesel engines for its various car segments. The plan to build diesel engines comes amid the deregulation of the diesel fuel by the Indian government which means that the price differential between petrol and diesel is bound to lessen.
The carmaker has been using the 1.3 liter multi-jet diesel engines by the Italian automaker Fiat for its car models such as the Swift hatchback, the DZire compact sedan and the Ertiga compact MUV. Dependence on engine supply from Fiat has left Maruti Suzuki with very less options to offer to its customers in India.
Commenting on the same, Mr. Kenichi Ayukawa MD Maruti Suzuki stated that the development of a diesel engine has already been commenced by the automaker and itโs looking into the forecasting analytics of the diesel prices. The new diesel engine is expected to enter the markets by 2014-15, he added.
