The Supreme Court said that no Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) vehicle will be sold in India across, with effect from April 1, 2020. Along with this, their registration will also be cancelled. That means BS-VI norms emission norm would come into force that time and only BS-VI fueled will be applicable throughout the country. Also Supreme Court issued dismissed the demand for a 6 month Grace Period of automobile companies.
Petition dismiss of Central Government and Auto Companies
A Bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazir and Deepak Gupta dismissed the petition of the Central Government and Automobile companies, where they demand for the sale of vehicles made before deadline. They debated that automobile companies should be allowed to sell their stock of BS-4 vehicles even after March 31, 2020.
Companies asked for 6 months Grace Period
Companies had assured that they would stop selling BS-IV vehicles before deadlines, but they should be given a 6 month grace period for the sale of the stock. However, the court dismissed his plea and said that the sale would not be allowed with the manufacturing.
BS-VI norms will be applicable instead of BS-IV
The Petroleum Ministry had announced to implement BS-VI norms from 2020, some time before. Because BS-VI Norms petrol and diesel will have less nitrogen oxides and harmful elements which are in the BS-IV norms fuel selling at the present time.
Oil companies have big investments in upgrading
The Government oil companies are doing very well to implementing BS-VI norms in the country. These companies are investing Rs. 30 thousand crore for upgrading themselves for BS-VI compliant fuel production. According to the Oil Companies and Automobile Manufacturers, the existing vehicle will not be a problem with the BS-VI fuel, but the engine efficiencies may be low.
