Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India has collaborated with the Indian government for a pilot project for supply of hybrid cars. The carmaker will be providing a hybrid variant of the Swift hatchback to the government.
Named as the Swift Range Extender, the hybrid car model was showcased by the carmaker at the recent Delhi Auto Expo 2014 in February 2014. The car model features a 658 cc inline-three cylinder sourced from Suzuki Japan and a 55 kilowatt capacity electric motor powered by a 5 kWh lithium ion battery.
As claimed by Maruti Suzuki, the hybrid car model offers a mileage of 48.2 kilometers per liter when in hybrid mode. In complete electric mode, the car is claimed to have a range of 25.2 kilometers on a single charge.
The automaker will be supplying the Swift hybrid car model to the Indian government as part of the government’s initiative to reduce pollution by promoting the use of electric vehicles.
