A number of car companies, particularly Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), are having a re-look at their export strategies in view of declining domestic sales. Earlier, Hyundai’s plan had been to sell more than half of its units in the domestic market and export the rest. Now, however, the company is thinking of reversing this strategy. In the last nine months of 2008, the company exported 198,600 units and sold only 177,095 units in the domestic market. Currently, the Hyundai i10 makes up the major chunk of HMIL’s exports. Also, ninety per cent of i20s produced in India will be sold abroad.
