In 1900 Carlo Maserati was building bicycles, but he also started to assemble engines. Soon the Maserati brothers were building Grand Prix cars, but it was in 1914 when Alfieri opened up his own workshop in Bologna and the Maserati brand was established. The company logo, which is a trident, was designed by Mario Maserati in 1920 and is based on Fountain of Neptune in Bologna.
The Maserati Company was sold in 1937 and in 1940 the factory was relocated to Modena, where it remains to this day. However the company passed through may owners and the company continued to succeed in many motorsports events. Some of the owners, included Citroen, Fiat, and at one point 50perceent of the company was owned by Ferrari. Today the company is part of the Maserati, Alfo Romeo and Abarth Group, which is still under ownership by Fiat. Currently Maserati produces the Quattroporte, Ghibli GranTurismo, and GranCabrio, but they are also launching two new upcoming models, including a SUV.
To celebrate their 100 years of existence the Italian car has launched a limited edition of its Quattroporte and it also reached a milestone last week when its 50,000th model car ever rolled off the production line. The landmark 50,000th vehicle was a Quattroporte S Q4 in dark grey with a red and black interior.
