    Indian car sales rise in May

    Indian car makers saw an increase in the sales of May 2008 as compared to May 2007 despite rising interest rates and anticipated rise in fuel prices.

    India’s biggest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki saw a rise of 15% in domestic sales to 64,143 units as compared to 55,952 units in May 2007. India’s biggest car exporter, Hyundai recorded a sales rise of 47% to 40,261 units as against 26,648 units in May last year. General Motors India reported a rise of 6.57 percent in domestic sale of 5,789 units as against 5,432 units in May 2007. Honda Siel Cars saw a decrease of 18% in sales to 3,944 in May 2008 as against 4,811 units in May 2007. Mahindra Renault saw a drop in its sedan sales of Logan from 2,551 units to 1,531 units this year resulting in 40% drop. While the utility vehicles sales for Mahindra & Mahindra saw a rise of 13% to 19,296 from 17,079 last year. Czech auto maker Skoda Auto India sold 1,802 units in May 2008 recording a three digit growth from 810 units in 2007. Tata Motors saw a growth of 9 percent of 19,234 units from 17,580 units last year.
