German automobile manufacturer and Europeβs largest carmaker Volkswagen is planning to launch a small car in the Indian market through its Indian subsidiary Volkswagen India. The company is also planning the launch of a sports utility vehicle.
The company currently has the Polo hatchback and the Vento mid-size sedan in the lower segment and it feels that it needs more small cars to fill the gaps in its small car product line. Commenting on the topic, Mr. Arvind Saxena Managing Director Volkswagen India β Passenger Cars Volkswagen Group Sales India stated that the carmaker is considering a premium car below the Polo hatchback as small cars account for the major part of the car market in India.
Mr. Saxena added that the automaker will avoid getting into the low cost segment in order to maintain the brand expectation which would require quality curtailments and compromises on features such as sturdy and safety or alternately pricing it at a premium.
