Nissan Motor Co. is aiming to sell 15,00,000 zero-emission vehicles by 2017 with its partner Renault SA of France to claim the title of world’s No.1 in green cars.
The company on October 24, 2011, announced its six-year strategy, including its plans to roll out a plug-in hybrid by the fiscal year ending March 2017. The company also has plans to boost the fuel efficiency of its vehicles by 35 percent in comparison to the 2005 models. Nissan President and Chief Executive, Mr. Carlos Ghosn told reporters at company headquarters, “More consumers are demanding products in line with their values, including cars and trucks with a lower carbon footprint,” and added the company was using the technology to produce green and fuel efficient cars.
The maker of the leaf electric vehicle stated the company was currently also working on a fuel cell, another kind of zero-emissions vehicle. Electric car market is an emerging market, and the company has so far sold 16,600 Leaf cars till date since it was launch in December 2010.
