The Government of India has already announced that the new safety features will be made mandatory in all new cars launched since October, 2017. This action taken under the Bharat National Car Assessment Programme (BNVSAP) and has proposed the New Car Assessment Program for India, which was introduced by Road Transport and Highway Minister , Nithin Gadkari. Under this program the all cars sold in India will be given star ratings on the basis of safety performance and it will be implemented in different phases. In this case, Indian car companies have only two options, either make changes it to its current production or stop the production and add these safety features to it.
Peoples are aware about how unsafe the most of the passenger cars in India and we have already seen in the recent Global NCAP tests. Most of the cars were failed that test, so much needed safety norms that India has set to apply. Here are some safety norms that will ensure the next generation of cars will be safer than what we get in India today, that making driving environment safer for us and our family.

Here are the lists of safety features, which will be made mandatory from October, 2017.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
Anti-lock Brakes or ABS is a feature that should have been standard in all cars in India long ago. But in the current car market the cheaper entry-level car have still not added one of this life-saving feature. Some of the manufacturers have started offering ABS as standard kit on all models while some offering it as an optional pack on select variants and models.
Airbags
Like the ABS, the Airbags also available as an optional feature in most of the cars or this feature is mostly given in the top of the car variant. But now it will be compulsory for the all new launched after October 20017 and it will be made available as standard features for all variants of car.
Reverse Parking Sensors
Rear visibility is the issue with all the cars and this increases the possibility of accident. This feature will have better alert system in cars and it will save the car from collision through sound and distance through notification. Currently, this feature is being made available in many top models but this feature will be soon as standard pack.
Seat Belt Warning
Safety belt is the most basic and effective safety system. This safety feature we can see in the all high variants of the entry level cars. However, it will also be compulsory for the standard variants soon. This feature will provide seat belt alert signal for passenger too.
Speed Warning System
The Speed Warning System will be made mandatory. At the moment it is not decided how much speed has been fixed for this. It is believed that there will be an alarm at two levels. One speed will be 80 kmph and second when speed 90 kmph. Alarm will start playing continuously at 90 kmph speed.
Manual Override
In case of accident, sometimes it is difficult to open doors with central locking, which delay the rescue operation. The all car have ‘manual override’ feature, so that the doors can be opened even when there is no electric power.
The main purpose of BNVSAP:
- Dual airbags and ABS compulsory in all newly launched cars since October 2017.
- Assigning the tax assessment rating of Frontal Side, Pedestrian Protection and Rear Impact. Only new launched (a new model that launches) must adhere to the safety features from October 2017. At the same time the existing models, which are being sold will available till October 2019.
