The new car platform that Bajaj Auto is currently building for Renault-Nissan will have multiple uses and will be profitable in itself, stated Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto. He stated the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) deal to make a small car that Renault-Nissan plan to sell under their flag is a bonus.
“We are developing a platform for the needs of Bajaj Auto. It can be used to make a new-generation three-wheeler, a van or a commercial vehicle. We are building the platform for our own needs. The same platform is being used to make the car,” stated Mr. Rajiv Bajaj. He expressed the Renault-Nissan deal is the “icing on the cake” as the company was making the platform first for its own needs. As rumoured, Bajaj Auto is spending a vast amount of money in building the platform, and would stand to lose heavily if the project is delayed or does not get started.
