Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has restated its opposition to the proposed additional tax on diesel cars in India and has asked the Indian government to refrain from imposing such a tax in the Budget 2012-13. The proposed tax is the result of a report by the Kirit Parikh committee on Energy which stated earlier that the diesel passenger cars contribute to 15 percent of the total diesel consumption in India.
The report has been rectified and it has been confirmed that the actual consumption by the diesel powered cars would be around 2 percent. Mr. Pawan Goenka President (Automotive and Farm Equipment sector) M&M has stated that since the erroneous figures have been revised, the argument in favor of the proposed additional tax has been rendered baseless.
Mr. Goenka also the President of Society of Indian Auto Manufacturers stated that in case such a tax is levied on diesel vehicles, the additional cost would be in turn transferred to the consumers.
