The electric version of the Chevrolet Spark, the Spark Electra, will be launched in India within the next twelve months. General Motors India had entered into a joint venture with Bangalore based Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) last month to develop green cars for the country. Mr P Balendran, the Vice President of GM India, told reporters that under the JV, RECC would provide the technology, while GM would engineer and manufacture the cars. The price of the Spark Electric will vary depending on the battery-type chosen by the customer. Battery prices range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 3.5 lakh.

The company also launched the Chevrolet Cruze this week, at a starting price of Rs 10.99 lakh. GM is targeting a monthly sales figure of 800 units for the Cruze, which comes in two variants – LT and LTZ. It expects the number to go up to 2,500 units by the end of 2009. The Vice President of GM India, Ankush Arora, told media persons that the D-segment in India was pegged at 4,000 units a month, and this was expected to grow by 10-12 per cent next year.
