Auto company Bavina Cars India Private Limited is planning to set up an electric car manufacturing plant at Ranipet, near Chennai. The company will invest Rs 300 crore into the new manufacturing unit and its first electric car is expected to roll out by 2011. The promoter of Bavina Cars, S Rajasekar, received a land allocation (100 acres) document from Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, M K Stalin, last week. The project will employ 1,500 people, and the plant will have a production capacity of 25,000 cars per year.
Bavina Cars will be only the second company in India to make battery powered cars, the first being Mumbai based Reva Electric Car Company (RECC). Tata Motors too is planning to launch an electric car within this year.
