To draw on the segment between the ultra low-cost Tata Nano and the Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have lined up an array of mini hatchbacks which are expected to hit the Indian roads in the next 12-15 months. These cars are expected to be priced between Rs. 200,000-350,000. Hyundai Motor, Tata Motors, General Motors, Renault and Volkswagen-owned Skoda are the top car makers in the race who are currently working on developing such models.
Hyundai Motor India is in the process of manufacturing a small car which is expected to be very competitively priced. Renault has already announced its plan of launching two small cars in 2012. Tata Motors is also working on a proposed small car model which would bridge the gap between Tata Nano and Indica. According to the reports, the car is being developed under the codename of “Dolphin.” Nissan and Ashok Leyland are jointly expected to launch a small car and last though not the least; General Motors and Skoda are working towards each developing a car which would be their cheapest launch in India.
