Tata launches Nano in Sri Lanka

Tata Motors started selling world’s smallest car Tata Nano in Sri Lanka on Sunday, May 29th, 2011. The local agents for Tata, Diesel and Motor Engineering (Dimo) quoted that they started accepting bookings for a stripped down version of Tata Nano at the price tag of 9,25,000 Sri Lankan rupees (USD 8,486).

Commenting on the response of the people towards the car, a company spokesperson said “We are getting good queries.” He further commented the car was available in Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Silver colours. The price of Nano in Lanka is three times of what it costs at home base. Nano, costing just under $3,000 in India, costs $8,486 in Lanka due to high import duties and local sales tax. Lanka had reduced car duties in June last year, but raised them again in April this year to stem the overflow of car imports.

Sales in Lanka mark the beginning of first import sales for Nano.”We have already formulated plans for its introduction in several countries, to be implemented over the next few years,” Tata’s Managing Director, P.M. Telang, said in a statement.
