Motion sensors are not really a new invention; they are used in security systems and more importantly in video games such as the Wii and the Xbox. But now this technology could very well be used in our cars as American manufacturer Cadillac is now showing. The same motion sensing technology also called gesture sensitive interface will be featured in Cadillac Cue infotainment system. In fact the other companies which currently use this technology are also playing crucial roles in its development as Microsoft is investigating with its Xbox Kinect. Also, Harman has unveiled a new system that recognizes both hand and facial expressions to control various cabin features for cars. Drivers will reportedly be able to use eye blinks to turn the stereo on, tilt their heads to turn up the volume and even tap the steering wheel to scan songs. Temperature adjustment gets taken care of by raising or lowering a hand above the gear shift, while pulling up a Bluetooth-connected phone is as simple as mimicking a phone with a hand. That’s pretty awesome stuff. The system uses sensors that monitor the gestures and movements and passes a signal to separate processors which then handle the hardware. However we already know that this technology can run into trouble because they are not always perfect. This means it could take another three years before this technology is finally ready to come our way.
