Washing the car at the weekend may be a familiar pastime for many of us, but it seems that for women, it may be more likely to be a chore that another member of the family takes on.
New research from the UK’s biggest car leasing website; ContractHireAndLeasing.com reveals that 55 per cent of men say they wash the car themselves at home compared to just 37 per cent of women*.
When asked whether another member of the family washed the car instead, 23 per cent of women said yes compared to just 4 per cent of men.
The gender divide was revealed as the website explored which method of car washing was most popular in the UK. Even with the exponential growth in car cleaning services of one kind or another in recent years, washing the car at home remains the most popular way to restore the shine to the nation’s motors.
“It was interesting to see that women appear to take a backseat in the care of the car and are leaving car washing to other family members.
“Previous research has shown that women tend to leave car maintenance to men too**, but we’re surprised that this even extends to simple jobs such as car washing. It seems some gender stereotypes remain deep-seated in our culture,” spokesperson for the website, Richard Lawton said.
