General Motors India (GMI), the Indian subsidiary of the American automaker witnessed a decline of 10.65 percent in its sales in the month of June 2012. The company sold 7,364 units in the month in comparison to 8,242 units sold in June 2011.

Mr. P Balendran Vice-President GM India stated that the fall in sales can be attributed to the sluggish state of the Indian auto market and the low economic activity due to high interest rates and high fuel prices. He added that the market is not expected to recover from the slowdown before the festival season. The company is also facing problems of supply constraints due to worker’s strike resulting in pending orders for the Tavera MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), stated Mr. Balendran.

The sales of the company were led by the Beat hatchback with 5,236 units, 614 units of the small car Spark, the Aveo sedan with 181 units, the Cruze with 557 units and 741 units of the Tavera.
